Hold the salt! Especially if you have heart disease.
Be extra careful of foods with high levels of sodium including the “Salty Six” which the American Heart Association recommends limiting or even avoiding.
- Bread and rolls
- Pizza
- Sandwiches and burgers
- Cold cuts and deli meats
- Canned soups
- Burritos and tacos
The goal is to keep your sodium levels down. So try this instead:
- Have just one serving of bread each day. Pick a whole-grain variety.
- With pizza, try adding vegetables. Like swap the pepperoni for peppers.
- If you’re having a sandwich or burger, skip the fries and try a side salad.
- Look for low-sodium options especially when it comes to deli meats and soups. Read labels so you know the salt counts.
- If you want Mexican food, make tacos and burritos at home. When you cook at home you control the salt shaker.
